Today Year 1 had a fantastic time at the National Railway Museum in Shildon, Durham. It took us quite a long time to get there but it was worth it! Everyone had lots of fun!
We began with a workshop where we looked at different artifacts from the past. We got to wear different train drivers hats (old and new), hold a coal shovel which was used by the fireman, we got to be ticket inspectors by stamping tickets and blew a whistle and horn. They were extremely loud!
We then got to take part in a craft activity where we assembled our own steam engine. The children had to name the different parts of the train. They were really good at this…
We then looked at a very old steam train. This was the steam train George Stephenson beat in a competition…
We were very lucky and got to stand on the footplate of the train where the driver and fireman would have been working very hard. We got to pull some of the levers which would have made the train go forward and backwards…
