Year 4 enjoyed an afternoon outdoors today.
The class were set a challenge of finding some suitable firewood in our nature garden. They then used their whittling skills to make some wood shavings to be used as tinder.
Mr Kennedy explained that we would be constructing a fire but first we had to prove that we could work safely. We watched a demonstration very carefully before working in small groups to construct our small fires.
We had to consider the fire triangle, ensuring that our fires would have a good air supply. Once constructed, we used a flint and steel to generate a spark and ignite our fires.
After persistence and care, we were all successful! As a reward, we were able to toast marshmallows and make some s’mores!
As you can see, they were very tasty!
